FEBRUARY ECO – CHALLENGE: Meatless Mondays: Eat meat-free each Monday during the month of February.

  • Bonus Point: Eat meat-free for one week.
  • Double Bonus Point: Eat meat-free all month.
  • Extra Bonus Point: Host a house party screening of “Cowspiracy” with friends.

Why, you ask? Here are a few reasons:

  • Meat production accounts for ~15% of greenhouse gas emissions – that’s even more than the transportation sector.
  • Factory farms raise 99.9% of chickens for meat, 97% of laying hens, 99% of turkeys, 95% of pigs, and 78% of cattle.
  • Not only do factory farms lead to the mistreatment, suffering and death of billions of animals every year, but they also cause soil contamination, loss of biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions and land, energy and water wastage.
  • Further, emerging foodborne diseases that are causing public and ecosystem health challenges around the world are often traced back to industrial animal agriculture.
  • Corporations have a vested interest in keeping the food system profitable above all, and they are powerful enough to shape policies that keep it that way. When corporate influence shapes policy, their profits come ahead of people’s interests.

SOLUTION: Reduce meat consumption, because less meat = less emissions.  And choose sources wisely.  Know where the meat comes from, how the animal was raised, and what it was fed.  By consciously choosing sources of meat, you can benefit your health, animal welfare, and our environment.
