350_boulder_group_aerialIt is no secret that 350 Colorado has the most amazing volunteers on the planet! As an almost entirely volunteer run organization, volunteers are the backbone of our work. They do everything from running local teams, creating art, rallying friends and family and everything in between. The Climate Hero of the Month program aims to recognize some of our amazing volunteers that go above and beyond in the climate movement. Thank you to all of our volunteers who gift us with their amazing talents and time!

This month we are proud to recognize Amalthea Aelwyn (Amy) as our August Climate Hero!

FullSizeRenderAmy is a super volunteer who has been essential in the Denver climate movement. Her commitment to fighting climate change and social justice issues is in enhanced by her limitless creativity, versatility and excitement to help out on any project. She is a committed and eloquent spokesperson and her ideas and insights have greatly benefitted 350 Denver.

Amy has come to every meeting since she first noticed us. In addition to managing our team communications she has also helped manage our Facebook page. She participates in every event and provides our team with professional grade photography for events like the March for Science, People’s Climate March, and many of the events held in support of Standing Rock Water Protectors. She also gifts us with terrific painting (on banners, signs AND faces) and always has a smile to share. Amalthea has participated in rallies, marches, events, art builds, meetings and serves on our new 350 Denver Leadership Council. After attending the recent 350 Leadership training, she helped spearhead a campaign to get the Governor to join the Climate Alliance. To top it off, Amy has helped in planning and setting up communications for our new Denver Divest campaign and has helped maintain and update our 350 Denver Facebook page.

Here is a little bit more about Amalthea:

Amalthea Aelwyn has done a little of everything in her life, and brings that diversity of skills to her activism. Her first love is art of various kinds, including wildlife paintings and photography. She’s worked in most mediums and likes the challenge of new things. She’s run businesses, tech teams, edited medical journals, run events, managed care programs, managed servers for a living, wrote journalism, as well as selling her own art work, among other things. She became a health activist and wellness researcher out of necessity, related to her battles with a lifetime of chronic Lyme and other health problems.  In the process, she came to understand a great deal about the complicated interactions between food, medicine, agriculture, environment, climate and health. She became an avid permaculture gardener to help herself heal while treating the earth well in the process. As she has learned to heal herself, her land and her history, she’s finally able to summon the resources to begin to work on the bigger picture related to why so many of us are exhausted and sick and divided. One aspect of that is the climate fight before us. Amalthea has waded in with the understanding that we need more people who recognize the interconnection of all these aspects of our struggle. We need to understand how poverty, food deserts, racism, corporate greed, nutrient loss, health struggles and the various other aspects of related problem are really one war the American people are waging to take back their autonomy and right to be safe.  She hopes to help bridge communities of warriors fighting for sanity, to help people understand we are really fighting for aspects of the same needs, so we can better help each other and thrive.

Thank you so much Amalthea for your contribution to our little family 🙂 we love you very much.

Bob and Kay not only did that, but drove 3 hours each way to get to the bus. Leading 350 Central Colorado demonstrates more commitment and hosting the State-wide Convergence helps us all build the personal connections we need to Kay and Bob Activistscontinue the growth of our organization. Bob and Kay do these things with such joy it is easy to overlook the sacrifices required in their lives to make ours better.”
